  • Proper signage. Exit signs need to be clearly marked for all to see. They should be illuminated with backup batteries in case there is a power outage.
  • Sprinkler system. Ensure your sprinkler system is functioning properly by having it serviced every 12 months or less by a licensed professional.
  • Fire alarm system. Your fire alarm system should also be tested and serviced regularly by a licensed professional.
  • Escape Routes. Escape routes should be positioned in ways that ensure anyone can safely reach them. These escape routes should be obstruction free, be enclosed with smoke and fire-resistant materials, and remain closed as much as possible to prevent the spread of smoke and fire.
  • Electrical outlets. Each electrical outlet should have no more then one item per outlet plug being used. All cords should be kept in good repair and replaced when needed!
  • Have fire evacuation plan ready and accessible to all!
  • Inform your guests of fire safety. All hotel guests should be informed of manual call points and the hotels escape routes. Forms should also be accessible to guests that clarify information such as steps to take if the guests see a fire or hears fire alarm.

First Aid Kit

A safety kit is something that every business should have. You never know when an emergency is going to happen, so you want to be prepared in case it does. There are several essentials that each emergency kit should contain. First, assorted bandages. If someone gets cut/has a wound bandages prevent dirt and debris from getting into the wound causing an infection that will prevent healing. Sterilization and ointment should also be in your kit to clean wounds/cuts. Protection such as latex gloves and resuscitation masks are important additions to your kits because it does not help the situation if the person performing the first aid gets infected.  

Know the Heimlich Maneuver

The American Heart Association is the best resource to learn how to do cardiac compressions. Simply put, the American Heart Association does not mandate everyone learning the rescue breathing aspect of CPR. However, when it comes to compressions all you have to do is put your hands over the victims hear and push to the beat of “Stayin Alive” by the Bee Gees which is roughly 100 compression/min. For proper CPR training have an individual in your office or business become trained in CPR through the American Heart Association! Cardiac compressions are a simple technique that can mean the difference between life and death. Consider these facts from the American Heart Association:

  • Bystander CPR can increase the victim’s chance of survival by as much as 300.
  • It takes roughly 8-12 minutes for an ambulance to arrive on the scene.
  • 88% of all cardiac arrests do not happen in a hospital or healthcare facility and nowhere near healthcare professionals.

Stop Heavy Bleeding

If an individual is heavily bleeding their body in unable to form a clot on its own so they could bleed out. You can stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound. Raising the wounded limb over the heart will also help to slow down the bleeding.

April Showers Can Bring Septic System Backups to Bennington, Vermont Homes

April showers bring May flowers, however, here in Bennington and Rutland County, Vermont area, heavy rains can be rough on a home's septic system.  On days like today, when rain is falling onto already wet ground, septic problems can be common.

When there is great deal of rain, the drain field in your yard can become saturated and stop the water from flowing out of your septic system as designed. Because the water has no exit point, it can eventually make its way back into your home. The waste water can travel back through the pipes and through your drains and toilets, causing an overflow.  If you have sewage backup through one of your drains, that is a clear sign that your septic system is malfunctioning.  

Other signs of a failing septic tank are: 

  1. A Foul Odor: A clear sign that your septic tank needs inspection is the presence of odors in your house, outside near your septic tank or near the pipe ventilation system. We all know the smell of the methane gas escaping, similar to rotten eggs, so it's not hard to identify! 
  2. Soggy Ground: Saturated areas around your septic tank may also indicate a problem. Excess moisture can be a sign that your tank is full or the drainage pipes are damaged.
